Hi and welcome!
Well, the weather has surprisingly behaved itself and it hasn’t gotten very hot, at least not as hot as it usually gets in Texas. I’m hoping it’ll make for a nice autumn – my favorite time of year.
Dear Editor,
Being a member of the community of Batesville, and a CATS member, I went to the federal court hearing in San Antonio July 26 and 27 then again on august 6. It was very upsetting to hear the Superintendent. Also Mr. Brown being said to be a hero. Read the rest of this entry »
As the first day looms on the horizon a only a week away, I have this sense of unease.
I can’t really place my finger on it, but with all the unrest surrounding the school recently, you have to wonder how things will fare for students this year.
To the Editor:
I want to thank Mr. Juan O. Sanchez, for the full coverage he is giving to the concerns of Batesville parents about the quality of education their children are receiving at Uvalde. As a substitute teacher with some years of experience on various UCISD campuses, I applaud the stand being taken by these parents, and want to do all I can, so that Batesville’s children can attend the school nearest to their home, preferably one that is walking distance from their house, so that no busing at all is required.
Hi and Welcome!
Well, it looks like the new school year will start as it ended…wet.
To the pleasure of some and the chagrin of others, the summer holiday was a bit of a disappointment with anticipated high temps nowhere to be seen.
Yes, it’s been hot, but with all the rain the weather doesn’t seem so bad, except for some unpleasant humidity.
Still, you have to admit it’s a lot better than frying if you’re out in the open, or burning your hands on the car door or the steering wheel and losing a few pounds sweating it hot.

Juvenile offenders remove graffiti and tag marks from the front of the Gabe Tafaolla Charter School fascade under the supervision of Uvalde PD Officer Wayne Seiple. The effort sends out a message to all current and would-be taggers that this is one of the community services which will be required of all offenders when apprehended, regardless of the offense. The charter school, along with other Uvalde locations, will now be under constant surveillance in order to control vandalism and defacement of public buildings. (Staff photo by Louie Neira)
Hi & welcome!
It seems the storms have left us for the time being – I guess that means we’ll be in the full throes of summer. Let’s hope it’s a short one.
Seems a shame, though. With less than a month until school starts back up again, there wasn’t much of a summer vacation for everyone. I know the river camps suffered this year, but that’s the price you pay, I guess. There’ve been times they prayed for rain, and now they’re praying that it’d just stop but it might be too late for that.

I’m sure people wonder why I get so upset, and why I can’t just leave things alone. When the people of Uvalde elected me to city council in May of 2004, I promised to work hard to effect a change in the status quo. I also spoke of the need for a more transparent form of municipal government.
Over the course of the first two years I found an enormous learning curve. What I mean to say is that you know a lot about a little, but very little about a lot. After watching and waiting, I began to see things I had not at first noticed. “The devil is in the detail,” as they say.

Wow! I’ve never seen so many letters to the editor in the years I’ve been reading La Voz. Apparently this Batesville/ UCISD issue has many feathers ruffled, and rightly so. I’ve only visited the Batesville schools once, a few years back, but I considered the condition of some of the buildings and property deplorable. But- I must add that relocating back to Uvalde after 20 years – I thought the same of some of the Uvalde schools. The same portable “temporary” buildings that were at Robb in 1977 were still there in the new millennium- so much for temporary”! I was surprised to see that UHS had a total overhaul while most of the elementary and middle schools were forsaken. It seemed as though the school board, whom allocates the money throughout the school district wasn’t really balancing the funds.
