This coming Oct. 4, Rio Grande College (RGC) will be having its first annual Math and Science Festival. The festival is sponsored through the Title V grant obtained by RGC last year, and is part of the efforts of the university to generate interest in math, science, and technology fields. The university already has a math and biology program in place and through Title V is in the process of establishing a chemistry and computer science program.
The festival is intended to provide an avenue to publicize the programs by providing science-oriented activities that will stimulate the interest of area students. Booth space is being provided free of charge for area schools, businesses, and organizations interested in participating in the festival.
To participate in the festival it is desired that participants provide a science project or activity that will interest festivalgoers. The activity can be in the form of an actual working project, or a show and tell concerning science or technology.
RGC encourages interested businesses and organizations to participate and have some sort of math or science activity at your booth to demonstrate the importance of math and science and how they are used on a daily basis.
The university is especially interested in businesses and organizations involved in engineering, architecture, manufacturing, telecommunications, and other science oriented businesses and activities.
Slated to provide various science-oriented activities is a group out of San Antonio called Mad Science. The group performs interesting antics aimed at inspiring kids to explore the wonders of science through classroom learning. Also in the works is a teleconference with NASA astronauts during the festival. Businesses and organizations from throughout the region serviced by RGC are welcome to participate.
To date numerous businesses and organizations from Del Rio and the area have signed up to participate. Some of the organizations include Del Rio San Felipe CISD, units from Laughlin AFB, HEB, San Felipe Lions Club, Amistad Lions Club, Casa Cultura, and RGC Future Educators Club, Psychology Club, and Society of Biology.
The festival will be held at the RGC Del Rio campus. For festival and booth information please call Title V Outreach Coordinator Beatrice De Leon at (830) 703-4823.

With the Title V grant obtained by Rio Grande College (RGC) now fully under way, the distance learning capabilities of the institution are being expanded and enhanced, the Title V staff is establishing contacts with area schools to ascertain needed workshops, training, and other needed services, and the development of the chemistry program is well underway and expected to be fully established by the fall of 2009.
